Teaching

Sixteen years of teaching Indian religions — in universities, at Oxford, online, and on the mat.

Teaching is the centre of my work. Since 2010 I have taught Hinduism, Indian mythology and Indian philosophy at five universities, tutored eighty-five course terms for the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, run a decade of continuing-studies courses at the University of Toronto, founded an online school with thirty-plus courses, and delivered philosophy modules to yoga teacher trainings in North America and Australia. The audiences differ; the standard does not. Every course is built on the primary texts, read in Sanskrit, and taught through the stories that carry the ideas.

I am available for sessional and visiting appointments, guest lectures, online course design, and yoga teacher training modules.

University Teaching

Sessional instructor at the University of Calgary, McMaster University, University of Lethbridge, Toronto Metropolitan University, and Hartford International University for Religion and Peace. Courses taught: Asian Religions, Modern South Asia, Understanding South Asia, Introduction to Hinduism, Popular Hinduism, The Hindu Tradition, Goddesses of India, Myths of India, Death and Afterlife, Atheism, World Religions.

Guest lectures at the University of Toronto (Introduction to Hinduism, The Mahābhārata, The Rāmāyaṇa, Hindu Philosophy, Women in South Asian Religions, and others), McMaster, Calgary, Colgate, Bethany College, Nazareth University, University of Hawaii, SUNY, and Texas Woman's University.

Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies

Tutor for the OCHS Continuing Education programme since 2020 — eighty-five course terms across ten courses: Three Short Upanishads, Vedanta and Samkhya, The Mahabharata, The Puranas, Mahabharata and Ramayana, The Bhagavad Gita, The Greatness of the Goddess (which I designed), Shaivism, A Study of Dharma, and Introduction to Hinduism. I also convene OCHS weekend schools and symposia and have given twenty-one public lectures for the Centre.

The Indian Wisdom School

Founded in 2021, The Indian Wisdom School is my online school: more than thirty courses in three streams — Shakti (the Goddess traditions), Story (the myths of Śiva, Viṣṇu, Rāma and the sages), and Spirituality (yoga philosophy, mantra, karma, the Upaniṣads, the Gītā) — plus a live Bhagavad Gītā study group, a Devī Māhātmya translation seminar, and seasonal workshops on Diwali, Navarātri and Pitṛ Pakṣa. Continuing Studies

Fourteen lectures for Road Scholar's lifelong-learning programme since 2020, including Introducing Hinduism, Karma and Rebirth, Telling Tales, Reincarnation and The Three Wishes.

Yoga Teacher Training

Yoga philosophy and mythology modules for teacher trainings since 2021: Breathe Strength Yoga, Cultivate Yoga (Cleveland), Ashtanga Yoga Hub, Radiant Spirit Yoga, The Yoga Space (Perth), Yogi Flight School, Passage Yoga (Calgary), Yoga Lab, and Soma Yoga Institute. Modules cover the Bhagavad Gītā, the Yoga Sūtras, the stories behind the poses, Śiva and Goddess mythology, and applied yoga philosophy.

Educational Resources

A TED-Ed animated lesson on the Goddess in Indian mythology (in production, 2026); guest editor of "Teaching Tales: Harnessing the Power of Storytelling in the Hindu Studies Classroom and Beyond," a special issue of the American Academy of Religion's Religious Studies News (2018).
